PERIODONTAL TREATMENTS

for Solon, Bedford, Macedonia, Aurora, Beachwood, Mayfield Heights, OH & Beyond

The name “periodontitis” means “inflammation around the tooth.” Microorganisms, such as bacteria, stick to the surface of the tooth and in the pockets surrounding the tooth, and they multiply. As the immune system reacts and toxins are released, inflammation occurs.

Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, affects the area around the tooth, including the bone and the gum. The main aim of periodontal treatment is to clean out bacteria from the pockets around the teeth and prevent further loss of any bone or tissue. At Solon Smiles, we offer a variety of periodontal treatment options depending on the severity of your situation.

STAGES OF PERIODONTITIS

When it comes to gum disease, there are two main stages: gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis
is a less severe form of gum disease. During this stage you may notice that your gums bleed when you floss, you have bad breath that won’t go away, or that your gums look inflamed or slightly darker than usual.

Periodontitis is a more severe form of gum disease that is a result of untreated gingivitis. During this stage, you may notice that inflamed gums begin to pull away from your teeth. This creates deep pockets in your gums and allows bacteria to enter and attack the supporting structures of your teeth.

SYMPTOMS OF PERIODONTITIS/GUM DISEASE

Gum disease is a silent disease, meaning that symptoms do not always appear until it is in a more advanced stage. Some warning signs include:

  • Gum recession
  • Mouth sores
  • Bleeding, especially while brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Consistent bad breath
  • Changes in the bite
NON-SURGICAL & SURGICAL TREATMENT OPTIONS

If you have been diagnosed with gum disease, there are several treatment options available depending on the details and severity of your situation. Here are just a few non-surgical and surgical options:

Scaling and Cleaning - This is a technique used to clean the root surfaces of the tooth in order to remove plaque and tartar from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins. An ultrasonic cleaning device is used to clean under the gum line, on the tooth, and around the root.

Medications There are a number of medicated options including prescription antimicrobial mouth rinses, an antiseptic chip, antibiotic gels, antibiotic microspheres, enzyme suppressants, and oral antibiotics.

Soft Tissue Laser - From the pockets under your gums where the teeth connect to the rest of your mouth, to the delicate edges of your gums that are visible when you smile, lasers can gently treat them all. The energy produced by the laser is readily absorbed by hemoglobin, melanin, and other chromophores found in periodontal disease, so treatment explicitly targets unhealthy tissues.

Gum Graft - Exposed tooth roots are the result of gum recession and a gum graft can help repair this and prevent additional recession and bone loss. Gum grafts can be used to cover roots or develop gum tissue where absent due to excessive gingival recession.

Pocket Depth Reduction (Flap Surgery) - Periodontal disease damages the tissues and bones around your gums leaving open spaces around the teeth that we call pockets. During flap surgery, the gums are lifted back so we can thoroughly remove all hardened plaque and tartar. The gums are then sewn back into place to reduce the space left between the gum and the tooth.

PROVIDING DENTAL SERVICES SINCE 2002

Your gums play a vital role because they act as a seal for the roots and supporting structures of your teeth, protecting them against bacteria and decay. When left untreated, periodontal disease only worsens. At Solon Smiles, we pair our periodontal treatment options with regular dental exams, routine dental cleanings, and fostering an efficient oral hygiene routine to ensure your oral health remains its best.
